Poverty twice as likely for minority ethnic groups: education fails to close the gap

The poverty rate for Britain’s minority ethnic groups stands at 40%, double the 20% found amongst white British people, according to new research published today (30 April) by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF). Minority ethnic groups are also being overlooked for jobs and are being paid lower wages, despite improvements in education and qualifications…

And the culprit is…? Could it be racism? The question of poverty is not really a question as much as it is a symptom of a particular mindset. Why does racism still exist, how it is perpetuated, who endorses it, how is it propagated, and who does it benefit?

If the “who” can be determined, the next question is, “Why, if at all, should racism be fought?”

Is poverty a means to an end? On the pyramid of economics, don’t the wealthy have to be supported by the poor? Would the elimination of poverty mean eliminating millionaires and billionaires? What millionaire or billionaire would appreciate giving up one’s wealth for humanitarian need?

I think the saying goes, “a fool and his money are soon parted.” Why would a rich man choose to be a fool. And if the poor are considered to be fools, what is wrong with exploiting fools?

It is written that it is easier for the hair of a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get into heaven. It is also written that those who would be great shall be least and those who are least shall be great. Is this economic wisdom? How should it be interpreted? How should it be applied?
