Breathing Earth dot net is a site I recently stumbled upon and it’s worth checking out. It is just a simulation, but it is an accurate one. The numbers begin when you start you visit and climb rapidly. Births, deaths, and co2 emitted. It’s pretty interesting and a bit shocking how fast the numbers can climb.

Since this present visit began, 560 people have been born, 220 have died, and over one million tonnes of co2 have been emitted into the atmosphere. TOO MANY HUMANS!!!

that’s the funniest part about this site. I stumbled on it back in July and wrote a blog entry about it (http://blog.circlealpha.com/?p=43). Like you the big thing I took away from it is that having a global birthrate that’s more then double the global death rate is totally unsustainable and insane. No animal species can afford to have its population expand that fast, and any animal that experiences the kind of exponential growth that our species has experienced in the last hundred years is heading straight for a mass die-off, something NOBODY wants. We have to recognize that we live on a finite planet with finite resources and limit our population accordingly. That means lowering birth rates everywhere.

The problem, of course, is that State-sponsored movements to limit birth rates have a nasty tendency to go the way of the Eugenics movement and center around forcibly sterilizing “undesirables” – ie poor people, people of color, and political dissidents. Not cool. That means efforts to bring down the global birth rate have to be centered in civil society, we have to self-organize and not rely on governments to do this because giving the State power over womens bodies and who gets to have children is a perfect recipe for disaster on all fronts.

just my 2 cents.

I fully agree with your two cents. We are on a highway to disaster.
