PLEASE BOYCOTT THE NOVEMBER ELECTION! DO NOT VOTE! YOUR VOTE IS A VOTE FOR WAR AND POVERTY AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION NO MATTER WHO OR WHAT YOU VOTE FOR!

Part 1: The Death of the Nation State

“[T]he nation state [is] so unnatural and artificial that it had to be imposed by extreme violence. In fact that’s the primary reason why Europe was the most savage part of the world for centuries. It was due to trying to impose a nation state system on cultures and societies that are varied and if you look at them had no relation to this artificial structure…In the course of creating modern nation states, Europe developed a culture of savagery and a technology of violence which enabled it to conquer the world, and as it conquered the world it attempted to impose nation state systems wherever it went, also artificial and violent. If you look at today’s major conflicts around the world, most of them are the residue of European efforts to impose nation state systems where it doesn’t make any sense, which is almost everywhere.”

Noam Chomsky

The nation state is dead. Its conceptual framework is a fiction held together by the desperation of a global idea-killing media machine and its sponsors who collectively seek to perpetuate this false concept of human organization so that they can hold onto the reigns of control and wealth.

The nation state died “in” the 20th century not “with” it. When Hitler fell in 1945, the Nation State fell with him. Every single dominant institution since that time has coordinated a campaign to create the mythological idea that the nation state abides into our post-modern world. It does not.

A nation state is a geographically defined area under a centralized mechanism of coercive control which is comprised of a people who are homogeneous in matters of self-interest, language, and culture. Every modern progressive must be a student of history and understand that the “Nation State” was born in the late 18th century and thus is a relatively recent political idea of power. The dominant feature of a Nation State is its geography which creates tangible global positions relative to other states: Territory. Historically, warfare has been brought to the world stage within the context of territorial accumulation and conquest thus both the need for, and the form of modern warfare is the product of this modern model of the nation state.

It exists only in the minds of each one of us who permit the mythology to persist in our homes, neighborhoods, schools, churches, temples and synagogues; in our entertainments in our physical and institutional infrastructure. It is only real in the sense that we make it real in our thinking..

What supports this admittedly radical assertion? First, there is no homogeneity left in the world that is dependent upon geographic area or proximity. Modern and post-modern advances in technology long ago left such concepts in the dust-bin that should be history; but history is still being written by the dominant institutions and so the collective delusion perpetuates. The reality is that borders and geographically designed units of coercive political power benefit only the few, the many are left behind in this geometry of war and famine.

The indicators of mythology and fiction are everywhere. The Democratic-run Congress is afraid to enforce its own subpoenas against White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers who have summarily refused to appear before a House sub-committee investigating the allegations of politically motivated firings of deputy Attorneys General. Candidates from both side of the political spectrum who don’t toe the line of corporate interests, specifically Ron Paul and Denis Kucinich are being systematically excluded from the debate and electoral process. The president has seen to the end of our precious civil liberties. All checks and balances have been removed by the White House and the Vice president’s Office and for those that remain, the spineless Democrats will do nothing.

“The two major parties have a stranglehold on our political system that no longer merits our participation in their crooked game. Political parties are not part of our Constitution and the two-party duopoly has demonstrated that both Democrats and Republicans put their own interests above those of we the people, our nation and our democracy. We cannot vote our way out of our current, dreadful political system. Now is the time for all good Americans to come to the rescue of their nation, peacefully by boycotting elections.”

Joel Hirschborn, NY TIMES

The 2008 presidential election is an institution designed to perpetuate the illusion of a viable nation state known as the United States of America. The electoral process is completely corrupted. Any person or idea which challenges this mythology is systematically culled from participation so that the resulting players are indistinguishable in matters of substance and differ only in the most cosmetic and superficial features.

Thus while this “Nation” teeters on the brink of economic ruin; while children starve to death in our cities; while indigenous people are slaughtered throughout the world by “globalization” and the IMF; while our soldiers patrol the streets of Baghdad killing men, women, and children, then are blown to bits themselves; while militarized police agencies subvert our civil liberties with an ever increasing reliance on technology and an ever decreasing reliance on the rule of law; while our leaders consolidate and deploy their propaganda machines and corrupt the accuracy of our electoral process; while phosphates and other toxins flood our oceans and destroy the very heart of our mother earth; while our landfills swell to bursting form the strain of our bloated and disgusting rates of consumption; while all around us man depredates himself and his environment from incessant greed and selfish gluttony and defines progress by the killing velocity of an assault rifle or the radar signature of a stealth bomber; while all of this is happening right now at this very moment; we are transfixed by the corporate mainstream media that make tons of money from campaigns and that want you to stay glued to suspenseful and irrelevant horse races so that you won’t notice what’s really going on.

I understand your disenchantment with current politics and the people running for office, but I have to say that I’ve never understood the “don’t vote” approach. It presupposes that politicians and the political parties will care that people aren’t voting and I have yet to see that idea holding true. Politicians only care about those who vote – it’s why they can ignore so many issues that the younger generation cares about. Only when people start to vote do they, the politicians, start to listen.

Boycotting an election is very different from boycotting a company. A company has profits to lose while the politicians just have an easier job because there are fewer people’s votes to try and win! If you really want to screw with them, pick a third party candidate in your area and go vote for them. If every disenfranchised person did that, the third parties would have a hell of a lot of votes and I believe that WOULD make the politicians care.

I completely agree that the elections are a sham. What is the point of voting if the election is rigged from the start. Furthermore, as you have so eloquently stated, this is an artificial/illusory ‘nation state’ to begin with. However, I would like to believe there is a way to be counted and still not take part in this supposed ‘democracy’.

A very heavily boycotted election would not be recognized internationally as a valid election. The American system of voting (and government) would come under intense scrutiny and embarrassment. It could even cause a financial crisis, given the recent lack of confidence in the dollar and the US in general. I say not voting this election is a good idea if you also campaign widely for a mass boycott of the election.

There should be the option to vote "None of the Above" on all ballots. This should include national elections down to any committee appointments on a community level. People should have the option to toss out all the candidates. This will help ensure parties, ideologies, corporate interests do not hijack the electoral process.

Sometimes the best decision is not to make a decision at all.

The cost of reholding an electrion is minimal compared to the mispending that may be done by a winning candidate who is merely the best of a bad lot.

I have introduced this on several 'elections' where groups are picking representatives. The tone and manner of the candidates changes considerably when they know they can be dismissed. The bull factor gets eliminated. It is very refreshing.

I have meditated upon this dilemma, as well. A boycott of the Election would be effective only in extremely large numbers and this would take a lot of organization - almost like sponsoring a candidate - and a lot of publicity. I had wanted to form a general strike among customer service employees in Key West to highlight the poor conditions most people work under, the ineffectiveness of wage legislation and the absence of worker's rights. Even though we were a small island with a small population, the effort needed to get enough people involved and willing to go through with a strike was immense. It never happened, because people feared the publicity, they feared losing their jobs no matter how sad or poorly paid, and they couldn't afford to give up two or more weeks of pay because they would be homeless if they did - two weeks being the minimum amount of time needed to make a point that would be heard, seen and felt by those who signed the paychecks and skimmed off of the tips.
my point being - we would need at least 50% of the entire voting population to actively communicate the intent to boycott and then be willing to barrage the media with it and be present at the polling booths to try to get others to boycott... I am not saying it's not a worthy protest of the system as it is...
I just think that this needs time and passion and the right people to organize it... and a citizenry that is much more involved than it is right now.
Until this vision can be realized, the more people who vote , even if it's for the "lesser of the evils", illusions and all - the better!!
