Heroes of Healing

When I was diagnosed with several dis-eases I was told by doctors I would only get worse, to be on pain pills and life looked grim. Through learning about the mind/body connection I was able to find teachers I resonated with to study so that I could heal myself. Two years later I am healthier than ever. I began to think about how wonderful it would be to have a large resource of inspirational leaders so that people would have one spot to go to -- to view some videos, hear about what others had learned about them and find out more about different modalities to heal...

Electric Cars Legalized in Vancouver

"Vancouver city council voted Tuesday afternoon to give a green light to low-speed electric vehicles..."

"...The small light cars are already allowed under B.C. law to travel on
roads with a speed limit of 40 km per hour or less, but are only
allowed on roads with faster speed limits when municipalities vote to
permit them..."

At least there is some progress! Way to Go Zenn and the province of British Columbia :)

Credit Card "Insiders" Speak Out About Abusive Practices

Earlier this year, former employees of MBNA and Bank of
America contacted AFFIL looking for a way to speak out about
disturbing sales practices they were trained to use as employees. Their stories confirm what
we've long suspected: that credit card companies extend credit
to those who can't afford it, and engage in a "tricks and traps"
business model designed to max out cardholders and keep
them on a debt treadmill as long as possible. Watch the video
and listen to what Cate Colombo
and Jerry Young have to say.

it shouldn't be 'costly' for corporations fto dump poison and pollution into the atmosphere, it should be *illegal*. we are well past the point on this planet where we can afford to let capitalists continue to externalize their cleanup costs onto the rest of us by using our skies and our oceans as dumping grounds.

It's time for capitalists to start cleaning up their own messes, and -even better - to avoid making them in the first place.

Almost three years after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is still recovering from a storm that destroyed 80 percent of the city. While many are still struggling, New Orleans has also attracted thousands of young people from diverse backgrounds, who are passionate about rebuilding an American city in a more equitable way. By creating coalitions of talented young people in the private and public sector who work together, New Orleans is engaging urban enthusiasts in the rebuilding process.

Having lived in Key West for two+ years, I am so proud and so pleased to read this review of the Green efforts of the "Julies" at the Banyon Resort. The island is long-overdue for this kind of conscious decision-making. The Florida Keys are such an interesting, intricate place... the eco-system in threat by over-development and over-population, more than anything else!! I will say, however, that the more "greening" goes into effect in business there, the better!
Hey Alex,
No, we did not meet. I allied you because I am working on a similar but different project - a web tool with more of a focus on social movements/organizations than individuals (www.squarepegged.org). So I'm curious, how long have you been working on rethos? Did you build it, or did you have someone else do that? What's it like getting people to join? Being a social entrepreneur is pretty fun, yeah? Anyhow, I hope you enjoyed Portland, it's a great city.
cheers

Eli,

If you do some research on the internet, you will find an array of opinions and resources on the subject. I actually have medical doctors, and naturopathic doctors that I work with to know and understand my body. I feel that if I provide a website and resource...20 other people can "spin it" and find something wrong and try to dis-qualify. Your best resource is to get in tune with your body. pay attention when you feel bad and why, and when you feel clear and healthy and why. This blog is designed to share an experience and bring awareness. :)

It truly amazes me how we all walk around stepping through this life without really understanding this thing thats actually walking around. So, getting to know our bodies on an individual basis would be a good place to start in preventing disease.

Its funny, When my mother first passed away with Cancer, I took on a belief that "Cancer was a business" and that if they found a cure...the health industry w...

This is great that you have shared this video here. Not particularly liking Kid Rock in the past, I was surprised to find myself applauding him for this song and this gutsy video that shows the toll war and greed and ignorance has taken on us... However, just one little note of caution:
The video is copyrighted material, and as I know from experience, whomoever owns the license to it (probably one of the BigFour: Universal Music Group more than likely) will not be happy about it being posted on YouTube (if it wasn't them posting it) nor will they be happy about it being posted here at Re...

Actually, David, for vegans our attitude toward nonhuman animals and our attitude toward human animals are connected already.

We begin with nonviolence toward the individual. Respect for the individual's right to live their life free of my interference. Just as I wouldn't breed humans to drag me around on a sled, I wouldn't breed dogs to drag me around on a sled. Just as I wouldn't dominate and control people and use them against their will for my own gain, I wouldn't do so to animals.

Great post. There is a more centrist, less ideological waypoint on some kind of road to Damascus. And that's for us to realize and come to terms with the fact that our attitude towards animals and food is addled with inconsistencies and irrational moralities. In one breath, we are slaves to the idea of local, seasonal and authentic food cultures. But then we count as uncivilized other versions of local, seasonal and authentic food culture: such as Asian cultures' devotion to eating dogmeat, African love for (at times unclean) offal and the gastro hill tribes we try to forget, such as the Pi...

I like me some faux meat that crumbles into red sauce and gives it some chew. The meat-eaters love it, too.

As for helping people, Fast Food Nation is a great primer for just how hideously many slaughterhouse workers are treated. For those who love their cheese, just remember that dairy cows are probably the worst treated animals on the menus, and they die horrible deaths. Also, the rennet in cheese comes from calves (as in, VEAL), so cheese has the unique distinction of being one of the most cruelly-produced items you can consume.

I hate to be the buzzkill, but if you eat cheese you ...

Hi Mary

Some excellent points and although I don't subscribe to a full Vegan fare. (Love my cheese, milk & free range eggs) Maybe if we pushed Alex suggestion a little harder - school training- we might not only stop or reverse: (your quote)
"Though we used nonhuman animals for virtually whatever purpose we wanted before then, the Industrial Revolution led to the dominance, control, exploitation, mutilation and slaughter of nonhuman animals as an industry. And as an industry that is part of a capitalist system, its main objective is profit."
We might even make some progress to stop ...

God bless you! You said everything I think and feel on the subject. I especially like the comment "it doesn’t have to involve soy products or any “faux” meat." However, I do enjoy faux meat. I want to keep my heritage and still eat ethically. Therefore, I want to create vegan versions of Armenian food.

In the book of Genesis, in the Bible, it doesn't mention eating animals, or killing them, until Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit.

I am happy to ready your article and I think this efforts inspire other people what they could do for a life If they know a life which sometimes we perceive as a food has gone through cruel murder and pain.

I believe there may be a number of sensible people who if just visit slaughter house and witness an animal's powerlessness voice struggling for hopeless efforts to survive, they may think about how to rescue them as a human being without discrimination o...

Mary,
Wonderful post as usual. These are precisely the philosophical arguments I struggled with in becoming a vegetarian. I hope this sparks good discussion on rethos. The idea that humans have ultimate control over all other sentient creatures is an idea that needs to be reconsidered.
Best,

I think this is a great song and video:
Linkin Park – What I’ve Done
http://youtube.com/watch?v=8sgycukafqQ

Lyrics:

In this farewell
There’s no blood
There’s no alibi
‘Cause I’ve drawn regret
From the truth
Of a thousand lies

[Pre-Chorus:]
So let mercy come
And wash away
What I’ve done

[Chorus:]
I’ll face myself
To cross out what i’ve become
Erase myself
And let go of what i’ve done

Put to rest
What you thought of me
While I clean this slate
With the hands of uncertainty

Is there a “Good Samaritan” clause in the Hummer sales contract that requires purchasers to render aid in the event they find themselves within a certain proximity of a disaster? Or are we to just count on the big hearts of those who leave a yearly carbon footprint the size of Montana when chips are down?

My guess is that the Hummers will be going from A to B with most of their seats empty!

Harrison Ford and John Travolta make use of their pilot’s licenses to rescue stranded hikers etc. The positive PR probably lessens the guilt of flying for fun. Who among us doesn’t have some vice, large or small, that we try to justify in some way? I like to have an adult beverage on a regular basis. But in doing so I support the industry that supplies the alcoholics. Yet I justify my actions with the research that shows moderate drinkers are healthier than teetotalers.

New comment! - Hummer Ad

1-So they are making Hummer owners into heroes? I don’t buy it since disaster rescue is not a reason to own a HUMMER. Besides, those kinds are disproportionately low occurrence, and most people would have the sense to get out of the way of these storms.

2-Are they encouraging HUMMER owners to stay behind and risk their lives to conduct individual rescue missions?

3-Inconsistency in the video: Hummer says after the disaster strikes, people run from point A to point B? Isn’t that before the disaster?

I find it interesting that you had involvement with the carbon market system through Terrapass. I am kindda on the fence regarding how I should view because I am aware of the pros and cons of it, but I truly do not understand how it works. Sometime in the future, could you share what you know and how it works? Maybe some of the politics going on behind the scenes?

I don’t think that was the point of the article. If you read on, it talks about Shell selling it because the financial returns were not lucrative enough, and implied is Shell is an oil company and solar is not aligned with its core essence.

It is not surprising that Shell did that either.

I am not an expert in this area but isn’t it true that the vast majority of human contracted antibiotic resistant bacterial infections are from MRSA infections (methicillan resistant staphylococcus aureas) and that this is due to the over prescription of antibiotics to treat viral infections in humans (for which antibiotics have no effect). I assume there are similar variants among livestock which are not zoonoses. This PR campaign implies that reducing consumption of meat treated by antibiotics would tend to reduce MRSA infecti...

New comment! - Against Hypocrisy

There is a lot that can said of the corporate model. Because they are fashioned to go after money, these efficient and effective organizational structures cut corners and make careless and dangerous mistakes (sometimes intentionally). I think the nature of the organization is most critical and if they are truly going to practice CSR, the bottom line cannot be the primary force compelling action. For that reason, I agree with Akeeba that it is not possible for “for-profit” corporations to be socially responsible.

I play the role of outspoken skeptic to any PR or marketing from business. That isn’t to say that they are being purposely deceptive, but PR has a way of blinding people. For Tyson to be pushing it so hard, they clearly see that there is a competitive need for wording and may bypass any valid tests. For example, Monsanto took an aggressive...

I disagree with this. The idea of social responsibility has been around for as long as there’s been a ‘social’ to speak of. I think you meant it’s a new concept within contemporary capitalist markets. That’s true.
New comment! - Google expands into alternative energy

Expect Silicon Valley tech companies such as Google (yes, a tech company) to play a massive role in driving innovation in solar power and cleantech development in general. Think their experience building microchips, computers, grids, screens & etc. might be helpful in developing solar cells, panels, nantech & etc.? Ah, youbetchya. GOOG ticker will be $1000+ in a year. Watch out Mr. Buffett

Eventually we’d all be taken care of.” Philanthropy is not something to be enjoyed by the rich & famous. Philanthropy is for everyone.

I don’t realy understand the need for all the ‘foundations’ in the first place. How can a person walk down the street not feeling the urge to help the needy around them , then walk into a bank and donate to this or that around the world foundation? Is anyone honest with themselves? Imagine if everyone helped those around them a little bit. Eventually we’d all be taken care of. No paper work, no accountants, no lawyers fees.

New comment! - GOOD Magazine: Against Philanthropy - The business of giving is doing more harm than good.

Mary E. Lee put it very well, I believe. There is currently a faulty system supporting both the philanthropic and capitalist segments. They are both faulty as a result of a defective international priority system and a tremendous lack of vision.

If philanthropy is doing harm, it is only because it has it’s roots in the same system that makes people poor or lacking in the first place, like the article stated, more or less.

New comment! - rethos.com - driving corporate social resonsibility

Hi Alex,

Love Rethos by the way -congrats to you, Chris, Pablo and everyone else that has been involved.

I’m very pleased you used the term “Corporate Behavior” in the above, while I know many in the field of research, ratings and social screens about business use the generally accepted term “Corporate Social Responsibility” or CSR at present there is no explicit legislation or contract that drives a Corporation to be socially responsible.

I prefer the term “Corporate Social Behavior” (CSB) ...

New comment! - GOOD Magazine: Against Philanthropy - The business of giving is doing more harm than good.

Large philanthropic foundations face some of the same organizational problems as large corporations.

The solution is not to put and end to business nor philanthropic organizations.

The solutions lies somewhere in re-thinking the underlying ethics and organizational practices of both.

New comment! - GOOD Magazine: feature on Bono

I disagree with how this video alleges that Bono’s meeting with the Bush administration were responsible for the subsequent budgetary decisions, as if the process is really that simple. I also resent how it paints Bono as some saintly figure. In my opinion, we need to stop worshiping philanthropic celebrities, as though their actions were flawless. This is Bono propaganda.
