When I was diagnosed with several dis-eases I was told by doctors I would only get worse, to be on pain pills and life looked grim. Through learning about the mind/body connection I was able to find teachers I resonated with to study so that I could heal myself. Two years later I am healthier than ever. I began to think about how wonderful it would be to have a large resource of inspirational leaders so that people would have one spot to go to -- to view some videos, hear about what others had learned about them and find out more about different modalities to heal...

riding a bike as a primary means of transportation is awesome if your physically fit, don't have to carry anything heavy, and don't have any physical disabilities. i think more people should ride bikes as a means of local transportation whenever possible. but if you want to get rid of oil-burning cars (which is the goal, isn't it?) bikes just aren't a good solution by themselves. what we really need is reliable, affordable, efficient, and fast public transportation. that said, critical mass rides are great fun and very empowering. for anyone out there who hasn't been on one, if you...

Great article that gets you thinking. I experienced a case when a boys behaviour was the onset to a servere mental illness that has lasted 25 years of his adult life so far. Most bad behaviour may be normal but not in every case.

Though I cannot say for certain (since I am obviously not on the editorial board of that paper), I'm fairly certain they did not republish this image to tarnish the name of Muhammad or mock the Muslim community in general. The publication of this cartoon, and the reason they're standing behind it -- and, now, standing on top of it shouting -- has to do with Freedom of the Press. I am particularly fascinated by the author's thesis that psychologists and psychiatrists are a class of people prone to excessive conformity and that this may account for their tendency to pathologize defiance. I believe that there is no such thing as "excess" passion for liberty. As a high school student, I often feel like I am being "enslaved" in a way, being forced to follow rules that noone will/is required to explain to me. I think Alec is right that net neutrality is at the heart of our Internet communication freedom, but I don't think it's yet a done deal that the laws are going to change in favor of the telecoms. Act now and put the pressure on, through your legislators, to ensure that net neutrality remains intact. Otherwise, there is no guarantee that communication channels like Rethos will get the distribution they deserve.

Bill, As a student of a nonviolence, this is a question I continue to struggle with on a daily basis. I have come to no conclusions, but I think you are right to doubt whether nonviolence is always the most effective method. As I see it right now, the extent to which a person is willing to forgo violence in the face of aggression is contingent on his/her spiritual beliefs (whether there is a god of judgment, for example) and/or his/her ability to respond with violence. A very heavily boycotted election would not be recognized internationally as a valid election. The American system of voting (and government) would come under intense scrutiny and embarrassment. It could even cause a financial crisis, given the recent lack of confidence in the dollar and the US in general. I say not voting this election is a good idea if you also campaign widely for a mass boycott of the election.

I completely agree that the elections are a sham. What is the point of voting if the election is rigged from the start. I understand your disenchantment with current politics and the people running for office, but I have to say that Iâ€™ve never understood the â€œdonâ€™t voteâ€ approach. It presupposes that politicians and the political parties will care that people arenâ€™t voting and I have yet to see that idea holding true. I’ve had a chance to do a little research and the fact is that it would not take any energy to power the pump if the tank of air used as the source was also compressed. Physics or not your claim that it would take more energy to compress the air than to power the car directly is simply not true. If that were true there would be no advantage to this C.A.T or compressed air technology.

I didn’t say it would take the same energy as an electric car (and in any case, not all forms of energy cost the same per joule.) I said it would take the same energy to power the pump as it would to run the car, assuming lossless storage and engine. Going 200 miles on 6 dollars means nothing about the technology. You can do that with a regular gasoline engine. You could get the savings from just making the car very small. Hm. No offense, Alec, but I wonder if this will make sense to you without a basic college physics class.

I will not pretend to be an engineer but since the cost of going nearly 200 miles is somewhere around six dollars then there must be something that makes this energy consumption cheaper. If you were correct than the energy it takes to drive an electric car would require the same amount of of resource consumption which it clearly does not. And finally: Why is it that the energy required to compress natural gas does not equal that consumed by CNG vehicles?

Well, the point for Tata Motors is not just to reduce CO2 emissions. It is also to build a very, very cheap car.

Alec, you aren’t quite right. Assuming the energy storage and the compressed air engine is totally lossless, it would take exactly the same energy to drive a compressor to power that car as it would to power that car itself.

Obviously if there were an equivalent energy consumption between driving an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and driving an air compressor than the whole point would be lost. Yes some energy is required to drive a compressor. Not nearly what it takes to drive a car.

there’s a bike library program run entirely by volunteers in Minneapolis called the Yellow Bike Library. they’ve been going for the better part of a decade. you pay a anual fee ($15) and then you can check out a yellow bike for up to a week at a time whenever you need one. pick it up at any yellow bike hub, drop it off at any other. it’s great! and no corporate involvement needed.

Harrison Ford and John Travolta make use of their pilot’s licenses to rescue stranded hikers etc. The positive PR probably lessens the guilt of flying for fun. Who among us doesn’t have some vice, large or small, that we try to justify in some way? I like to have an adult beverage on a regular basis. But in doing so I support the industry that supplies the alcoholics. Yet I justify my actions with the research that shows moderate drinkers are healthier than teetotalers.

1-So they are making Hummer owners into heroes? I don’t buy it since disaster rescue is not a reason to own a HUMMER. Besides, those kinds are disproportionately low occurrence, and most people would have the sense to get out of the way of these storms.

2-Are they encouraging HUMMER owners to stay behind and risk their lives to conduct individual rescue missions?

3-Inconsistency in the video: Hummer says after the disaster strikes, people run from point A to point B? Isn’t that before the disaster?

I’d say it’s corporations and the government… The US government uses the internet to infiltrate activist groups, spy on people, etc. But I agree with Alec- AT&T is pulling a bait and switch on us by making it seem like it’s only the government that’s a danger and that corporations are our friend. In the Civil War of the US, satire, similar to this, was credited for being the third cause of the war. The letters of Petroleum V. Nasby, a devote southern confederate, circulated in the northern newspapers and reflected the common stereotypes that the North viewed of the South. In realty, prominent anti-slavery editor David Ross Locke wrote the papers and stirred the common frustrations of the time.

I call it greenwashing only because there is that room for confusion. There is absolutely no identification of the ionophore by name. They give the name. I will do the research attempting to find a valid study that verifies their claim.

This is an interesting case study in the cross-over between public relations and corporate social responsibility. After reading the article, from my understanding Tyson is using a new for a chemical that kills the microbes in chicken stomachs, but does not affect the antibodies in human beings (through some study not mentioned, but likely approved by the USDA).

They have they conveyed this to the consumer through messaging: â€œChicken Raised Without Antibiotics that impact antibiotic resistance in humans.â€Â

“If leaders like this …” I would say distinguish between representatives (eg elected folks) and leaders (people who lead). Radical leadership (ie not within the standard frame of reference) always comes from the grassroots and never from the top (think gandhi, King etc … people who go in whole new directions). If you are waiting for those ‘at the top’ to lead you will die of old age. Leadership is needed, and it is up to each of us to start providing it.

Senator Inhofe was the Environment and Public Works Committee. He has been around for a while so I think that he has a certain level of seniority. He should have a clue as to what is happening. This email was recent, within the week. WTF?

I like this writing style but the piece does ring a bit of the same kind of false feminism found in the statement “I’m a feminist: I love women!” Meaning I love women in a far-away sexual way, not in the way I interact closely with or trust or respect them as human beings. That really reinforces the problem with the corporate capitalist structure. You start with a small corner store and end up with an unethical, life insurance-taking out, bullying, giant of a complex, because the profit motive drives the whole process.

If I may chime in…

So-called “Social Responsibility” is clearly in opposition and empirically opposed to the bottom line (profit) where corporations are concerned. If nothing changes regarding the “appropriate” behavior of corporations, (whether by interventions or levees or legislation), then there will be no incentive for corporations to take on any responsibility other than the ONE they currently maintain: a responsibility to maximize profits for their investors (period).

Richard brings some very interesting commentary. However, what Richard is doing is what we call projection; because a couple of corporations that are harmful to humanity, all corporations must therefore be the same.

You’re partially right on this. A corporation does wants to solicit you. However, corporations would join the Rethos community specifically for the purposes of learning from you. How can they sell to you if they don’t know what it is that you want?
