Heroes of Healing

When I was diagnosed with several dis-eases I was told by doctors I would only get worse, to be on pain pills and life looked grim. Through learning about the mind/body connection I was able to find teachers I resonated with to study so that I could heal myself. Two years later I am healthier than ever. I began to think about how wonderful it would be to have a large resource of inspirational leaders so that people would have one spot to go to -- to view some videos, hear about what others had learned about them and find out more about different modalities to heal...

Don't Patronize Me: The Economy 101

I have now seen at least a dozen television commercials and psuedo-short-documentaries and news blurbs about "how we got into this financial mess" and "what exactly is a credit crunch?" I find it to be rude, disdainful, patronizing and insulting that somehow, we (the American public) are deemed too ignorant to understand what has brought us, collectively, to the edge of financial ruin. Some of these pieces of "information" are delivered in cartoon format, no less, which gives me the eery feeling of being four years old and watching School House Rock, learning how a Bill becom...

Credit Card "Insiders" Speak Out About Abusive Practices

Earlier this year, former employees of MBNA and Bank of
America contacted AFFIL looking for a way to speak out about
disturbing sales practices they were trained to use as employees. Their stories confirm what
we've long suspected: that credit card companies extend credit
to those who can't afford it, and engage in a "tricks and traps"
business model designed to max out cardholders and keep
them on a debt treadmill as long as possible. Watch the video
and listen to what Cate Colombo
and Jerry Young have to say.

the question really is, is making say, 50 gallons of compressed air with electricity, less expensive than with gas? if so, then it would be alot cheaper then the traditional approach for the following reasons among other:

less maintenance, a reduced overall cost due to less maintenance. as you all know, oil is a ...

New comment! - 'Critical Mass' Acts to Promote Urban Bicycle Transporation

riding a bike as a primary means of transportation is awesome if your physically fit, don't have to carry anything heavy, and don't have any physical disabilities. i think more people should ride bikes as a means of local transportation whenever possible. but if you want to get rid of oil-burning cars (which is the goal, isn't it?) bikes just aren't a good solution by themselves. what we really need is reliable, affordable, efficient, and fast public transportation.

that said, critical mass rides are great fun and very empowering. for anyone out there who hasn't been on one, if you...

New comment! - Participatory Democracy? Step One: Stop Voting!

I have meditated upon this dilemma, as well. A boycott of the Election would be effective only in extremely large numbers and this would take a lot of organization - almost like sponsoring a candidate - and a lot of publicity. I had wanted to form a general strike among customer service employees in Key West to highlight the poor conditions most people work under, the ineffectiveness of wage legislation and the absence of worker's rights. Even though we were a small island with a small population, the effort needed to get enough people involved and willing to go through with a strike was...

Thankfully, my mother had the insight and the fortitude to weather out the behavioral issues without medicating me... unlike all of these poor thousands of children who are sedated every day in our country. We need to stop allowing teachers, administrators, psychiatrists, misguided and tired parents, and the pharmaceutical companies the power to tamp out the small flames of independence and individuality that could become vast fires ...

When are people ever going to learn to watch how they act, watch what they say around children? The things we say in prejudice are absorbed by their impressionable young minds so easily! They are constantly under tremendous peer pressure as well. This is just so sad and so pointless. Maybe if people learn from this it won't be entirely in vain, but I'm not holding my breath!

In fact, Alex, I don't find the cartoon objectionable or tasteless. I wouldn't have banned it. My objection is to the newspapers reprinting it and claiming any other reason than to whip up the bigotry.
Number- I agree that the great God $$$ drives more of the American Way, the American imperialism, the American warmongering.
Am I lucky to be in Canada - You bet. if we want to compare to places where I would have been robbed of any opportunity to be able to live in peace and freedom.
I am also fortunate to be able to see that the US government agenda is not the values of most Americans.

Though I cannot say for certain (since I am obviously not on the editorial board of that paper), I'm fairly certain they did not republish this image to tarnish the name of Muhammad or mock the Muslim community in general. The publication of this cartoon, and the reason they're standing behind it -- and, now, standing on top of it shouting -- has to do with Freedom of the Press.

They're standing up for their basic right to publish what they want and not be chastised for it.

The cartoon itself is offensive, of course, especially (but not only) to the Muslim community. It spits on one...

Very insightful post, Alec. It might be worth mentioning that there is a professor of psychiatry, Thomas Szasz, who has been arguing against the mainstream notion of mental illness for many years. From the description of his latest book, The Medicalization of Everyday Life (http://www.syracuseuniversitypress.syr.edu/fall-2007/medicalization-everyday.html):

"Defining "medicalization" as the perception of nonmedical conditions as medical problems and nondiseases as diseases, Thomas Szasz has devoted much of his career to exposing the dangers of "medicalizing" the conditions of some who si...

the only religion that did not start a war in this world is Buddhism, so I think its safe to say that all other religions can't go about and say "oh, it's not our fault". "Don't drag our God into the dirt." I think even Jesus had his share. I bet he did and you just didn't get it. You know why? People in this part of the world accept the opinions of others and don't start a fatwa because they think someone slam- dunked God or those two religious freaks from 2000 years ago ... It is not as showing of solidarity..It is an attempt to malign or at least to "piss off" muslims. It seems to be working, but, not only is it highly racist it is patently unfair.
If we view the world through unbiased eyes, we would recognize that by far and away the majority of violent acts are performed by Christians and "Christian" nations. Specifically, the United states and their other "bully" allies.

New comment - Denmark newspapers reprint controversial cartoon

Fanatic Islamics need to get over it!!! The ISLAM is not the only religion around the Planet. The posting is absolutely necessary since it is a true sign of freedom of speech. Apparently something that some Islamic nations or Muslim countries lack there of.
I'm an American who has lived over seas all his life and I am appalled to see with what kind of force religious fanatics try to get a foot in the door here in Europe. How dare anyone to threaten a cartoonists' live just because he has mocked your "GOD" - How arrogant is that?

Nicely stated Heather. I am particularly fascinated by the author's thesis that psychologists and psychiatrists are a class of people prone to excessive conformity and that this may account for their tendency to pathologize defiance. Perhaps the DSM V should have a new condition called CCD (Conditioned Conformity Disorder). Heather, please go out from high school and take your ideas and do great things with your life. We will all be the better for it.

New comment! - Teenage Rebellion Now Considered Mental Illness

I believe that there is no such thing as "excess" passion for liberty. As a high school student, I often feel like I am being "enslaved" in a way, being forced to follow rules that noone will/is required to explain to me. I understand that there need to be rules and regulations, but I also believe that the individuals being forced to abide by these rules deserve an explanation of why. And if/when they decide that they disagree with the rules, and chose to rebel against these rules, I think it's ludacris to label them as mentally ill. Rebellion is defined as "the resistance to or defiance of...

New comment - Denmark newspapers reprint controversial cartoon

The assassination attempt is obviously wrong and extreme. I think the reprinting of the cartoon is petty act and not a 'symbol of solidarity'. Three people, at least, went to the extreme. Because of that, newspapers decide to re-offend millions of people all over again? How is that solidarity? Or logical?
Culturally, we don't understand how someone can be so upset by the representation of a figure because we don't have anything in our culture to correspond. So we've ridiculed all Muslims in the world because we feel they shouldn't be upset. It is, after all, "just a cartoon".
That's the e...

This cartoon is both ignorant and necessary. Many people associate Muhammad with terrorism because they know little about Islam as a religion. This is the perfect opportunity for Muslims around the world to defend their faith and to silence the violent minority that tarnishes their reputation. Still, the ignorance is downright offensive even to agnostics like myself.

New comment - Nonviolence: Practical or Practically a Fantasy?

As a Christian who attended a Mennonite seminary and believes in nonviolence and nonviolent resistance, I have come to the conclusion that self defense to save your life or the life of others is a natural instinct. I was sexually abused as a child, and if someone attacked me I would fight back.

However, I am opposed to the U.S. use of military might. I am opposed to war. How do I reconcile my two beliefs? I do not. I live with tension. In this world that is filled with beauty, love, hate, and ugliness I realize that sometimes two beliefs can be opposite and still both equally valid. Not...

There should be the option to vote "None of the Above" on all ballots. This should include national elections down to any committee appointments on a community level. People should have the option to toss out all the candidates. This will help ensure parties, ideologies, corporate interests do not hijack the electoral process.

Sometimes the best decision is not to make a decision at all.

The cost of reholding an electrion is minimal compared to the mispending that may be done by a winning candidate who is merely the best of a bad lot.

I think Alec is right that net neutrality is at the heart of our Internet communication freedom, but I don't think it's yet a done deal that the laws are going to change in favor of the telecoms. Act now and put the pressure on, through your legislators, to ensure that net neutrality remains intact. Otherwise, there is no guarantee that communication channels like Rethos will get the distribution they deserve.

In response, the thing that comes to mind for me is this: We all have different philosophies or spiritual paths that we are traveling and striving in our lives...

I think the main word is striving. That is why Buddha is Buddha, and we are all trying to self-actualize. I am certain (although I am not a Buddhist) that any Spiritual leader has had to deal with struggles similar or just as pulling as this one...and they too fail...then they hurry back on the path. So, I say keep struggling until it's not a struggle anymore and then you will have reached another level in this Spiritual p...

I believe this quote is refering to the concept of loving your opponent. Maybe loving your opponent is too strong a sentiment. Perhaps, feeling a degree of compassion for their situation and what you are about to do to them is more like it.

As for the help you requested I will now input my two cents.

I have had a few violent experiences in my life and what I have learned from them is that it is almost never worth it. Let insults wash over you and remain calm. Don't let your ve...

Oh, and this as well:

Ishmael:
"To differentiate the violence from the violent man, the sin from the sinner, is indeed often impossible. It has been my experience that after being beaten there is nothing left of the evil that possessed the guy, and all there is now is a poor soul wondering how it came to this.

So may be we have to beat the devil out of the guy and stop beating the guywhen the devil has left him. The two are difficult as many have trouble beating anyone, and on the other hand many have trouble to stop beating every one."

Bill,
As a student of a nonviolence, this is a question I continue to struggle with on a daily basis. I have come to no conclusions, but I think you are right to doubt whether nonviolence is always the most effective method. As I see it right now, the extent to which a person is willing to forgo violence in the face of aggression is contingent on his/her spiritual beliefs (whether there is a god of judgment, for example) and/or his/her ability to respond with violence. I don't know where I stand - I think I would have to fight back to the best of my ability if forced to confront the "rape ...

A very heavily boycotted election would not be recognized internationally as a valid election. The American system of voting (and government) would come under intense scrutiny and embarrassment. It could even cause a financial crisis, given the recent lack of confidence in the dollar and the US in general. I say not voting this election is a good idea if you also campaign widely for a mass boycott of the election.

It presupposes that politicians and the political parties will care that people aren’t voting and I have yet to see that idea holding true. Politicians only care about those who vote – it’s why they can ignore so many issues that the younger generation cares about.
The hole America is falling into in terms of corporate power and influence on government is one that is hard to get out of. Mark my words…it gets worse from here if nothing is done.

Alec,

It is nice that you are curious about this stuff.

You say “it would not take any energy to power the pump if the tank of air used as the source was also compressed.” Yes. But the air has to be compressed somewhere along the line. That compression takes energy. Same thing with electric cars. The electricity has to be generated somehow. (And some ways are good, and some are bad.)
You say, “[My claim that] It would take more energy to compress the air than to power the car directly is simply not true. If that were true there would be no advantag...

New comment! - Forget the Electric Car: This one runs on compressed air!

I’ve had a chance to do a little research and the fact is that it would not take any energy to power the pump if the tank of air used as the source was also compressed. Physics or not your claim that it would take more energy to compress the air than to power the car directly is simply not true. If that were true there would be no advantage to this C.A.T or compressed air technology.

New comment! - Forget the Electric Car: This one runs on compressed air!

I didn’t say it would take the same energy as an electric car (and in any case, not all forms of energy cost the same per joule.) I said it would take the same energy to power the pump as it would to run the car, assuming lossless storage and engine.
Going 200 miles on 6 dollars means nothing about the technology. You can do that with a regular gasoline engine. You could get the savings from just making the car very small.
Hm. No offense, Alec, but I wonder if this will make sense to you without a basic college physics class.

Well anyway, cheers!

New comment! - Forget the Electric Car: This one runs on compressed air!

I will not pretend to be an engineer but since the cost of going nearly 200 miles is somewhere around six dollars then there must be something that makes this energy consumption cheaper. If you were correct than the energy it takes to drive an electric car would require the same amount of of resource consumption which it clearly does not. And finally: Why is it that the energy required to compress natural gas does not equal that consumed by CNG vehicles?

Well, the point for Tata Motors is not just to reduce CO2 emissions. It is also to build a very, very cheap car.

Alec, you aren’t quite right. Assuming the energy storage and the compressed air engine is totally lossless, it would take exactly the same energy to drive a compressor to power that car as it would to power that car itself.

But air compression, unless implemented in a very sophisticated way, is a lossy storage medium, because compressing air makes it hot. Unless that heat is stored or harnessed somehow, the compressed air ju...

Obviously if there were an equivalent energy consumption between driving an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and driving an air compressor than the whole point would be lost.

Harrison Ford and John Travolta make use of their pilot’s licenses to rescue stranded hikers etc. The positive PR probably lessens the guilt of flying for fun. Who among us doesn’t have some vice, large or small, that we try to justify in some way? I like to have an adult beverage on a regular basis. But in doing so I support the industry that supplies the alcoholics. Yet I justify my actions with the research that shows moderate drinkers are healthier than teetotalers.

1-So they are making Hummer owners into heroes? I don’t buy it since disaster rescue is not a reason to own a HUMMER. Besides, those kinds are disproportionately low occurrence, and most people would have the sense to get out of the way of these storms.

2-Are they encouraging HUMMER owners to stay behind and risk their lives to conduct individual rescue missions?

The current regulations which force AT&T to swallow the entire net when passing it on to DSL customers are content neutral and thus if AT&T wants to do business through its phone lines it cannot reach into its network stream and, for example, block Google until it pays a network toll for the privilege. That’s good law and the government that enforces it is good government. That’s law that really says ‘Hands off the internet&#82...

Same line of poo the media networks feed us about Democrats and Republicans, that they are polar opposites when in fact they are both corporate-funded PR campaigners campaigning for the same exact thing.

CM supporters believe that this an important right to fight for. They do not believe they are “implying that they are above the law” anymore than the busriders were so implying by breaking the law in Selma.

loved this the first time i read it and still love it. But it shouldn’t just be a joke, California should follow the Lakota’s lead and declare independence for real.

I’m dead serious.

really, if CA declared independance, what could they do to stop us? what would they do, invade LA? I think not… An independent California would be a nuclear power and the 8th largest economy in the world with a bigger population and economy then all the red states combined. There isn’t a damn thing they could do to stop us.

just my 2 cents.

New comment! - Dear Red States

In the Civil War of the US, satire, similar to this, was credited for being the third cause of the war. The letters of Petroleum V. Nasby, a devote southern confederate, circulated in the northern newspapers and reflected the common stereotypes that the North viewed of the South. In realty, prominent anti-slavery editor David Ross Locke wrote the papers and stirred the common frustrations of the time.

Hopefully this information helps, and helps to put some context to what Alec has written and why it might belong on Rethos.

If you are so cloistered as to not be aware that humor, satire and social criticism are some of the historically most effective means to change then I do not know how to respond to you except to say lighten up dude..if you don’t take a breath and smile once in a while then nothing is ever going to change..c’mon gimme a break already!

Dear James:
It is not a “joke” but it is a humorous allegorical satire of what California, if she were a living being, might say to the states who voted for Bush..again if she were a human being which she is not. California and the other states who voted for Kerry (In the US a state can only be for one candidate for president), in other words, we don’t count up all the votes in the US and see who won, each state theoretically elects the president then sends its number of delegates to the electoral college and then that state casts its electoral votes in favor of whichever candidate...

I call it greenwashing only because there is that room for confusion. There is absolutely no identification of the ionophore by name. They give the name. I will do the research attempting to find a valid study that verifies their claim.

I play the role of outspoken skeptic to any PR or marketing from business. That isn’t to say that they are being purposely deceptive, but PR has a way of blinding people. For Tyson to be pushing it so hard, they clearly see that there is a competitive need for wording and may bypass any valid tests. For example, Monsanto took an aggressive...

This is an interesting case study in the cross-over between public relations and corporate social responsibility. After reading the article, from my understanding Tyson is using a new for a chemical that kills the microbes in chicken stomachs, but does not affect the antibodies in human beings (through some study not mentioned, but likely approved by the USDA).

Depending on your age and geography, hunger, disease, or violence as a consequence of social disintegration are much more likely candidates.
“If leaders like this …” I would say distinguish between representatives (eg elected folks) and leaders (people who lead). Radical leadership (ie not within the standard frame of reference) always comes from the grassroots and never from the top (think gandhi, King etc … people who go in whole new directions). If you are waiting for those ‘at the top’ to lead you will die of old age. Leadership is needed, and it is up to each of us to start providing it.

New comment - A short story on racism

I like this writing style but the piece does ring a bit of the same kind of false feminism found in the statement “I’m a feminist: I love women!” Meaning I love women in a far-away sexual way, not in the way I interact closely with or trust or respect them as human beings. It has a “them” feel to it, even if it’s supposed to be complimentary. So, yeah, I’d say it’s just a different flavor of racism, but racism all the same.

I agree completely Ian, let’s set the incentives to be “ethical, virtuous, and moral.” Generally, that would entail setting up an artificial market where the incentives run beneficially, because from current evidence, market pressures create a slavish system. The most profitable thing to do is have your product made as cheaply as possible, and sell it as expensively as possible. Hence sweatshop products being sold to rich people. The only reason this would ever change is if some company said, we are a responsible company and pay our wage-slaves double what they pay and ...

It’s just that when they’re little you don’t really have to worry about them because their power isn’t as overwhelming as your News corp’s and Clearchannel’s…yet. Given enough time the structure moves toward the life-dominating corporations we see now.

It is precisely this reason,...

Ironically, all corporations start that way; as a corner store. Just as Walmart did.

“Power today resides in control of the means of production, exchange, publicity, transportation and communication. Whoever owns them rules the life of the country, even if democratic forms remain. Business for private profit through private control of banking, land, industry reinforced by command of the press, press agents and other means of publicity and propaganda, that is the system of actual power, the source of coercion and control, and until it’s unravelled we can’t talk seriously about democracy and freedom.”

Amen.

Ian, we applaud your effort and respect your company. We understand people generally have good intentions. Do you think the receptionist at Kaiser Permanente likes to turn down life-saving procedures, or that Ford managers enjoy laying off thousands of people? The good intentions of any corporation on the stock exchange is limited by the growth of the profit margin. Any altruistic action that doesn’t make money will never happen. Tell me, how the hell do you make money from allowing the community you serve and employ have a say in distributing profits, something tha...

Well what a fine debate!

If I may chime in…

So-called “Social Responsibility” is clearly in opposition and empirically opposed to the bottom line (profit) where corporations are concerned. If nothing changes regarding the “appropriate” behavior of corporations, (whether by interventions or levees or legislation), then there will be no incentive for corporations to take on any responsibility other than the ONE they currently maintain: a responsibility to maximize profits for their investors (period).

Richard brings some very interesting commentary. However, what Richard is doing is what we call projection; because a couple of corporations that are harmful to humanity, all corporations must therefore be the same.

Unfortunately, this is very far from reality. The reason why I actually take offense to this depiction is because, I work for a corporation that does good things for people. And, the reality is, there are a lot more corporations like the one I work for then the large corporations that Richard depicts.

Ian, I think you severely underestimate the craftiness of the corporate world and overestimate its legitimacy.

Why should we even bother to pester and prod these organizations time and time again, just constantly trying to get them to stop their greedy ways? Boycott after boycott, trial after trial, struggle after struggle. Here’s the ultimate problem – they aren’t going to do an inch more than they have to, to make money. Its always going to be an uphill battle. True, starting a co-op based society is an uphill battle as well, but at least once its set off we...

Kiadso,

You say: “I cannot for one minute imagine a corporation taking anything from an article posted on Rethos and making a company policy decision based on it. Corporations on Rethos would want to be on Rethos not to learn from us, but to SOLICIT us.”

You’re partially right on this. A corporation does wants to solicit you. However, corporations would join the Rethos community specifically for the purposes of learning from you. How can they sell to you if they don’t know what it is that you want?
