Statement by WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan

November 14, 2008, Delhi, India: In the streets of Mustaffabad, a poor
quarter of Delhi, children in sandals sit on top of piles of broken
glass and twisted metal, smashing computer monitors. Men with
blowtorches melt circuit boards, while nearby, women sort and scrub
other boards with diluted acid. Charred fiberglass and copper dust
litter the ground.

This is the world of the electronic waste (e-waste) recyclers, who make

Greetings to all! Happy holidays! Merry Festivas (for the rest of us)!

Please check out the video that Rebecca has posted here at Rethos. It is amazing! I never knew that for each garbage can of junk I throw out it needs thirty garbage cans of junk to be thrown out just to make it! So every time you haul a trash can out to the curb imagine that you are really hauling thirty trash cans to the curb! Unbelievable. This is a great video please check it out at http://www.rethos.com/news/view/911-The-Story-of-Stuff

Will any of you be in Los Angeles next week? - Alec Henderson

Dear Rethos family:

I will be in downtown Los Angeles on October 15, 2007 for a protest rally designed to pressure
investment firms to divest from companies who are funding the slaughter of tens of thousands of Men women and children in Darfur. I hope any of you can come. It would be great to meet, say hello, and indulge in a little civil disobedience!

The situation in Darfur becomes more and more critical every hour. Try to imagine military secret police driving around Santa Monica and Venice in Humvees slaughtering everyone they encounter; razing the beach houses, ...

New comment! - Race and Urban Poverty

And the culprit is…? Could it be racism? The question of poverty is not really a question as much as it is a symptom of a particular mindset. Why does racism still exist, how it is perpetuated, who endorses it, how is it propagated, and who does it benefit?

If the “who” can be determined, the next question is, “Why, if at all, should racism be fought?”

Is poverty a means to an end? On the pyramid of economics, don’t the wealthy have to be supported by the poor? Would the elimination of poverty mean eliminating millionaires and billi...

October 1, 2007 was the first day of the new session of the United States Supreme Court. We should all keep a close watch on this august body as so many of our personal liberties are now in the custody and care of a majority junta of traitors who installed our current nightmare administration as against the will of our electorate.

Keep up the great work you are all doing on Rethos! I am proud of you!

The world I want

I want to join a movement of world-wide universal compassion for all beings. I want to live in a world where people travel by bicycle and grow their own food and who realize, as Epicurus did, that life should be simple, wholesome, nutritional and supportive in all ways, physical, emotional and spiritual. I want to see the end of the corporate hegemony which sucks the life out of our local communities and replaces it with the robotic corporate model of the big box monoliths and the conformist consumer citizen automaton.

Honorable Governor Schwarzenegger:

At this point in history even the short-sighted can see that there is no
future for opposite-sex-only-marriage. More and more the high courts of this country are agreeing that equal protection demands that marriage laws be gender neutral under the heightened scrutiny by which gender based laws are judged.

Will Social Networks Change the Nature of Philanthropy?
By Tom Watson, 6/13/2007
A few weeks ago, my daughter and I started a bank and now we make loans to businesses all over the world. Now, before you speculate on my family wealth or means – and my place among the banking titans – consider that we started this little lending institution of ours with $250. And keep in mind that our “bank” is really one of thousands, that we meet with other owners online, and that they don’t appear to be captains of finance (from what I can tell by their...
