Media's dinosaurial monster

With time, I am getting increasingly intimidated and disturbed by the media around me, especially electronic. Drama, hype, big words, suspense documentaries and dreadful background music. The reporting style is too melodramatic and filmy - almost poking fun at a tragic event or ridiculing a disastrous situation.

I don't know if it is my ultra-sensitivity to unfortunate happenings or keennes to concentrate on remmedial solutions rather than endlessly pondering at an event and the damage caused.

It seems to me too much of the same is being feeded into our minds and hearts. ...

Dear AOKW Luminaries and Friends,

I cannot help but comment on the profound shift of consciousness that has just occurred as a result of this US election. It cannot be described in any other way but this: Awakening. Humanity has just been Awakened to the possibility of a New World Order; one that may now be built upon a foundation of Open Dialogue, Cooperative Collaboration and Equal Fellowship!

However, I feel that the road ahead will be quite a challenging and perilous one. The events that occur in the week ahead may test our collective determination and resolve.<...

Just go to www.CreditCardReform.org and with one click you’ll send a real post card to each of your representatives this Valentine’s Day. Consumers Union will hand deliver postcards in your name to your Representative and Senators on February 14th.

On January 29, AFFIL members and Maxed Out director James Scurlock hit Wall Street to talk to bankers about Maxed Out, the subprime mortgage crisis and its effect on our economy. The conversations were surprising – even bankers agreed that we need regulation to keep the economy on track and prevent predatory lending.

After the Fed

EDITORIAL
After the Fed

Whether or not the Federal Reserve’s recent dramatic interest rate cuts are the right medicine for today’s stalling economy — and the jury is very much out on that — it is clear that the Fed has used up a big chunk of its recession-fighting ammunition in a very short span of time. In just over a week, it has slashed its benchmark interest rate by a total of 1.25 percentage points, to 3 percent. That doesn’t leave a lot of room to cut further without opening the door to a potentially nasty upsurge in pr...

Crashing the Subprime Party

Wall Street strikes again! Putting corporate interest before good judgment and consumer protection has to be stopped! Check out this article from Slate by Nicholas Bagley: Crashing the Subprime Party How the feds stopped the states from averting the lending mess.

’...Some of the biggest players in the secondary mortgage market are national banks, and the states’ efforts to curb predatory lending clashed with the banks’ fervent desire to keep the market in subprime loans rolling. And so the national banks turned to the Treasury Department’s Office of th...

When is enough enough? This is a great article by Adam Doster that sheds some light on the plastic hell Americans are living in. It’s time to start fighting back!

Killer Credit
Attack of the $915 billion consumer debt monster
By Adam Doster

Candace Angus is not one to break the rules. When she served on the Chicago police force for 25 years, it was her duty to maintain order. And as a longtime credit card user, she was never late on a payment and never in debt. So when she found interest on her Capital One balance considerably higher than she anticipated, she wa...

Cementing Israeli Apartheid: The Role of World Bank

Despite the 2004 International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision that called for tearing down the Wall and compensating affected communities, construction of the Wall has accelerated. The route of the barrier runs deep into Palestinian territory, aiding the annexation of Israeli settlements and the breaking of Palestinian territorial continuity. The World Bank’s vision of “economic development,” however, evades any discussion of the Wall’s illegality.

My gift to you this season are some of the valuable Sustainability-related domains I’ve collected over the years.

All I ask in return is that you design a really cool site that gets people involved, spreads the Sustainability Symbol around the world and brings attention to at least one of the Climate Change related projects we’re working on (Like “STOP the GLOFs”) The rest will be up to you.

Simplify the Holidays and Stay away from Credit Card Traps

As you consider how to celebrate the holidays responsibly, take some time to protect yourself from credit card tricks & traps. Read AFFIL’s Holiday Credit Card Tips before you break out the plastic this season.

1. Don’t get tricked, trapped or suckered into a card with bad terms. If you want a credit card, get one with a long-term low interest rate (APR). If you get a low introductory rate, chances are it’ll start at 0% and then jump to 20% with one almost-on-time-but-didn’t-quite-make-it payment. Still want a credit card? Just know...

Have you had an Overdraft Nightmare? Tell us about it!

Congress needs to hear your story -

Jennifer Rakowski of Oakland, CA had been with her bank for 15 years when, before she knew what hit her, she accumulated a series of overdrafts in quick succession that put her over $300 in the red.

Has something like this happened to you?

Consumers are catching on to the ways in which banks artificially increase overdrafts, costing their account holders billions per year in unfair fees.

Hey Everyone:
Yours truly is trying to shut down the conglomerate stores that control so many of our towns and villages. This is a Jeffersonian project. It is a Wiki that I am trying to start to get folks who want to join in a boycott of the Borg stores like Home Despot, Burger Kill, ScaredButts, Wal-Mart. Please visit us at Here Buy and help your local merchants take back that market from the scourge of the multi-nationals.

I have a number of problems with this article.

The author’s central thesis is apparently that “inequality” is a global problem that cannot be met with a single solution and that no solution(s) have apparently been found and therefore since this heretofore unattainable panacea is currently unavailable, the author proposes to brainstorm for possible solutions and to speculate as to what state we would find ourselves in if “we tackle[d] the topic of creating a more level p...

Living. Hold on. I was just beginning to imagine. Living, what would that be?

I have serious doubts about whether I will make it before the others depart. I grab my newly repaired, basement-junk ten-speed bicycle from the rack on the bus and peddle frantically down Wilshire Boulevard chasing the setting sun to the appointed place for my first ride with “Critical Mass”, an organization created for the sole purpose of meeting at a predetermined place and time and traveling by self propulsion through city streets en mass.

The banking industry is being hit hard by the subprime loan collapse. Bank of America laid off 3,000 workers and Merrill Lynch posted its first quarterly loss in six years. What are banks doing to make up the loses?

Pop quiz: What exactly is the problem with credit cards?

1. The aggressive, misleading marketing: “You are pre-approved” letters for your dog.

A retrofit effectively takes place when new design patterns can be wisely inserted into existing structures. So, let’s go back in time and retrofit this site with an article dated from back in June.

New comment - Are Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich CraZy?

Great rant man. I’m a Canadian, but I watch a decent amount of American television. I have never even heard of Mike Gravel, and I rarely hear Dennis’ name mentioned either. I’m sure they are both the shit, they must be if they speak the truth. That’s just not ordinary.
