Garbage!

Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home

3000 toxic landfills in North America

1.3 trillion gallons of raw sewage waste in US per year – equal to 99 days of continuous flow over Niagara Falls

One year’s worth of ‘road runoff’ in North America – petroleum mixed with precipitation – equals 2.5 times the volume of Exxon Valdez spill

In North America, we are the ultimate consumer society. And consumers make waste. Tonnes and tonnes of it.

Toronto was lucky home to the November 19, 2007, World Premiere of Andrew Ni...

Center for Biological Diversity vs Bush Administration

I get depressed when I think about the complete disregard Bush and his administration have shown toward the environment and the scientific research community in general.

But then I get psyched when I read about groups like the Center for Biological Diversity, based in Tucson, Arizona, who are suing the Interior Department over the Endangered Species Act. They are bringing the court challenge to get some animals upgraded on the endangered list, covered by the Act, and to get some others back on.

Biodiversity Hotspots

Some parts of the world with so much flora and fauna never cease to amaze. And there are awesome organizations like Conservation International and The Nature Conservancy which are doing phenomenal work in collaboration with governements, ngos and businesses to protect particularly sensitive areas.

I have a particular fondness for the mountains of Southwest China, in Yunnan province, where I lived for a year. Both organizations I mentioned are active there. Nature Conservancy has set up a number of protected areas and fostered ecotourism and other incentives for protecting th...

Mongolian grassroots activism & Goldman Environmental Prize

Great story of one of the recipients of this year’s prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, Ts. Munkhbayar of Mongolia.

Mining is a huge industry in Mongolia and supports many people in good ways – but rampant unregulated mining has also been a huge problem on a number of fronts, notably environmental. Mongolia’s lifeblood, for fishing and livestock, is the fresh waterways – and it is great to see the Onggi River Movement making amazing progress to preserve it.
